Melanie Lee Chang
I began taking pictures in 2006 using two cameras, a Leica M3 and a Rolleiflex 2.8F, that belonged to my father. I have digital cameras too, but I prefer using my father’s cameras and make my best pictures using them. My photographic style, if I have one, is “opportunistic†– I capture whatever images present themselves to me if they seem interesting to me. I take all of my photos handheld using available light, and I develop my black and white films at home, in my bathroom.
I was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Northern Virginia. A paleoanthropologist by training, I hold PhDs in physical anthropology and evolutionary biology from the University of Pennsylvania. Currently I am working on a postdoctoral fellowship in genetics at the University of California, San Francisco. For me photography is a hobby. My other hobbies include reading, writing, hiking, horseback riding, and my dogs.
My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001, went through surgery and radiation that summer, and has been cancer free since then.
